UK North Hoyle offshore wind farm started generating electricity in the winter of 2003. The project is located 4-5 miles off the North Wales coast between Rhyl and Prestatyn and comprises 30 wind turbines. Each turbine is rated at 2 megawatts (MW) and, when fully operational, the wind farm will generate enough electricity to meet the annual needs of some 50,000 homes. This clean generation will avoid the release of about 160,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (the main greenhouse gas contributing to global warming and climate change) every year. |
