GHANA
Small-scale wind generators built by local craftspeople after training from Hugh Piggott of Scoraig Wind, Scotland. The picture features erection of the “Piggott” test machine at the CSIR Institute of Industrial Research, Ghana. By November 2004, 9 “Piggotts” were up and running, providing electricity to stand alone (off grid) applications such as schools |

"Everything
in relation with the system was obtained in the local market - built by
local people in this country. So there is not a situation where if something breaks down we have to import something from outside." |
Wisdom Togobo of Renewable Energy and Environment Systems Ghana explains the project's philosophy. | ||

UK North Hoyle offshore wind farm started generating electricity in the winter of 2003. The project is located 4-5 miles off the North Wales coast between Rhyl and Prestatyn and comprises 30 wind turbines. Each turbine is rated at 2 megawatts (MW) and, when fully operational, the wind farm will generate enough electricity to meet the annual needs of some 50,000 homes. This clean generation will avoid the release of about 160,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (the main greenhouse gas contributing to global warming and climate change) every year. |
